Dr. Timothy Patitsas, PhD

Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology

Timothy is the newly-appointed Interim Dean of Hellenic College, and Assistant Professor of Ethics at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, a position he has held since the fall of 2005. www.hchc.edu

Hellenic College is the undergraduate counterpart to Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology; and offers majors in Religious Studies, Psychology, Business, the Classics, and Greek Studies, while enriching students in the Orthodox Christian faith. Its graduates boast a high rate of job placement.

In addition to his regular academic responsibilities, Dr. Timothy designed, built, and leads the annual St. Helen’s Pilgrimage, an intensive five- to nine-week summer study program of Orthodox Christian Spirituality and Modern Greek conducted in Greece, the Holy Mountain (Mt. Athos), Turkey (Constantinople), Israel, Palestine and Albania.  Dr. Patitsas has led the pilgrimage since 2006, and together with the Foundation for Hellenic College Holy Cross, has developed it into the premier learning and formational experience for MDiv students and seminarians.

Dr. Patitsas’ new book, The Ethics of Beauty (St. Nicholas Press), is a comprehensive and insightful study and examination of the centrality of beauty in every aspect of the Orthodox Christian approach and understanding of life, including war, trauma, psychology, gender, spirituality, bioethics, and social ethics. www.stnicholaspress.net

Timothy is completing documentaries on the life of St. Amphilochios Makris and on Holy Week in Jerusalem with Beauty First Films, a Portland-based non-profit which he co-founded. He is the co-author of the Liturgical Seasons Calendar, a powerful aid to prayer and ecclesial self-identity available through Beauty First Films and Ancient Faith. www.beautyfirstfilms.com

Prof. Patitsas serves on the boards of The Russian Orphan Opportunity Fund and The Center for Byzantine Material Arts.
